Audra McDonald's talents are unrivaled in its breadth and diversity in her roles as a performer, singer and performer. McDonald was born in Fresno California, where she was raised by a large family full of musicians. In the Juilliard School in New York City, McDonald received training as a classical singer. In 1994, a year following her graduation from the Juilliard School, McDonald won the Tony Award for "Best Performance by a Leading Actress in the Musical" for Carousel. The following four years she was awarded two additional Tony Awards for the category of principal actress. She performed in Broadway premier productions of Terrence McNally's musical Ragtime and Terrence McNally's performance Master Class in 1996. This was an incredible number of Tony Awards by the time she was thirty. She received her fourth Tony for her performance in 2004 with Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun as well as at the end of 2012. In 2012, she received five Tony Awards and the first time in the category of lead actress for her role of The Gershwins Porgy and Bess in the lead role. In the following years, she co-starred alongside Kathy Bates and Victor Garber in the critically acclaimed 1999 Disney/ABC television remake of Annie and then in 2000 she had a recurring role on NBC's popular series Law & Order Special Victims Unit. McDonald, who was awarded the Emmy Award nomination back in 1999 due to her part in the HBO version of Pulitzer Prize-winning play Wit with Emma Thompson was seen on television in 2003 with the political drama Mister Sterling. The film was produced by Emmy Award-winning Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. In early 2006 she joined in the ensemble of the WB's The Bedford Diaries and over the course of the season, she was been a frequent guest on the NBC drama series Kidnapped. McDonald was awarded a 4th Emmy for her performance as Lady Day in Emerson's Bar and Grill, which aired on HBO in the year 2016. The Bite is a drama featuring six episodes that are based on an epidemic, produced through Spectrum Originals & CBS Studios. She starred with Taylor Schilling & Steven Pasquale. Having first appeared in the role of U.S. attorney Liz Lawrence in 2009 on CBS's civil television drama The Good Wife in 2018 McDonald took on her role (now called Liz Reddick) as a regular in the season premiere of The Good Fight on Paramount+ getting 3 Critics Choice Award nominations for her performance. She guest stars in Julian Fellowes' historical thriller The Gilded Age.
